Title: Introduction to Defensive Driving
Type: Lesson
Defensive driving is the practice of using safe driving strategies to identify and avoid hazards on the road — even when other drivers make mistakes. It’s about staying alert, proactive, and in control at all times.
Motor vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of workplace injuries and deaths. Most of these accidents are preventable with better attention, training, and decision-making.
Reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities
Lower company vehicle damage and insurance costs
Improve driver confidence and professionalism
Protect pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users
Stay Focused
Avoid distractions (phones, food, daydreaming)
Keep both hands on the wheel
Always watch mirrors and blind spots
Stay Alert
Scan the road 12–15 seconds ahead
Anticipate others’ mistakes
Check surroundings frequently
Stay Prepared
Keep a safe following distance
Always have an escape plan (e.g., open lane, shoulder)
Know how to react in emergencies
To maintain a safe distance:
Pick a fixed object ahead (signpost, tree)
When the vehicle in front passes it, count “one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, three…”
If you reach the object before 3 seconds — you’re too close
More space is needed in rain, snow, or poor visibility.
Defensive driving is more than obeying traffic laws — it’s about actively avoiding danger by staying ready, aware, and one step ahead.
