Title: Working at Heights: Ladders, Scaffolds & Roofs
Type: Lesson
Working at heights can involve many different surfaces, each with its own unique fall hazards. Whether it’s a ladder, scaffold, or rooftop, workers must know how to move, tie off, and operate safely in that environment.
Use the right ladder for the job — don’t stand on top steps or lean too far
Always maintain 3 points of contact
Ladders must be placed on firm, level ground
The ladder should extend at least 3 feet above the landing point
The proper ladder angle is 4:1 — for every 4 feet of height, the base should be 1 foot out
Must be erected under supervision of a competent person
Platforms must be fully planked and guardrails installed
Never use makeshift platforms or boxes to gain extra height
Inspect for stability and never exceed the load rating
Tie off if working at height without guardrails
Always tie off when working on an unguarded or sloped roof
Use warning lines at a minimum of 6 feet from the edge
Consider roof anchors and horizontal lifelines
Be cautious around skylights, which are considered floor openings
Wear proper fall protection gear
Secure tools and materials
Keep surfaces clean and dry
Use fall arrest or restraint systems as required
Follow site-specific protocols and work under supervision when required
