Title: Pre-Operational Inspections
Type: Lesson
Before operating any forklift, a pre-operational inspection is required to ensure the equipment is safe and fully functional. This step not only protects the operator and others but also helps avoid costly damage and regulatory violations.
Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(q)(7), forklifts must be examined daily before being placed into service. If used on a round-the-clock basis, inspections must occur at the beginning of each shift.
Tires (condition, inflation, wear)
Forks and mast (cracks, bends, damage)
Overhead guard
Fluid levels (oil, fuel, coolant, hydraulic)
Battery level (if electric) or fuel (if IC engine)
Leaks or obstructions underneath
Horn, lights, and alarms
Steering and brakes
Hydraulic controls (lift, tilt, side shift)
Seatbelt
Gauges and warning lights
Backup alarm and mirrors
Do not operate the forklift. Remove it from service and report the issue to your supervisor or maintenance team immediately.
