Title: Safe Operating Procedures
Type: Lesson
Safe operation of a forklift requires more than basic driving skills. Operators must stay alert, maintain control, and follow strict procedures to prevent incidents and protect those around them.
Wear your seatbelt at all times
Check surroundings for pedestrians, vehicles, or obstructions
Ensure the load is secure and the path is clear
Sound the horn when approaching intersections, doors, or blind corners
Start slowly and gradually pick up speed
Avoid sudden stops, turns, or accelerations
Keep both hands on the controls
Turn slowly and allow room for the rear swing of the forklift
Always look in the direction of travel — use mirrors if needed
Drive forward going up ramps and in reverse when descending with a load
Never turn on an incline
Keep the load uphill to maintain stability
Approach loading docks slowly and squarely
Never allow passengers unless the forklift is designed for it
Don’t raise or lower loads while in motion
Never lift people using forks without an approved platform
Do not exceed load capacity
Stay alert
Communicate clearly with pedestrians and team members
Use your horn — it’s a critical warning tool
Keep the load low while moving
Follow the facility’s designated travel paths and speed limits
