Title: Introduction to MEWPs
Type: Lesson
A Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) is any powered device that lifts personnel above ground level to perform work at height. These machines are commonly known as boom lifts, scissor lifts, or aerial lifts.
MEWPs are used in construction, maintenance, warehousing, and facility services for jobs like:
Overhead electrical work
Painting
HVAC maintenance
Inventory and shelving
Exterior building repair
OSHA covers MEWP use under 1926.453 (Aerial Lifts) and general construction standards.
ANSI A92.22 and A92.24 standards provide detailed safety requirements for design, use, and training.
Employers must provide proper training before any worker can operate or work from a MEWP.
Operators must be trained and authorized
Fall protection (harness + lanyard) may be required depending on the lift type
Pre-use inspections and function tests must be performed
Workers must follow manufacturer guidelines
Tipping and crushing hazards must be identified and avoided
MEWPs come in two main categories:
Group A – Vertical lifts that move straight up/down (e.g., scissor lifts)
Group B – Lifts that extend beyond the base (e.g., boom lifts, articulating lifts)
We’ll break these down more in Lesson 2.
Even a short fall from a lift can cause serious injury or death. Most accidents are preventable with training, planning, and proper equipment use.
