Title: Pre-Use Inspection and Function Testing
Type: Lesson
Before operating a MEWP, it’s critical to perform a pre-use inspection and function test to ensure the equipment is safe. OSHA and ANSI standards require this be done every day before use.
Skipping an inspection could lead to tip-overs, entrapments, hydraulic failures, or electrocution.
Check for physical damage or anything that may affect safe operation. This includes:
Tires and wheels
Guardrails and platform gates
Hydraulic leaks
Cracks or rust on structure
Electrical wires, batteries, or fuel levels
Decals and warning labels (legible and in place)
Fall protection anchor points
Outriggers and leveling devices
Operate the controls to verify:
Platform raising/lowering
Steering and movement
Emergency stop and descent controls
Tilt alarms and interlocks
Guardrails or gates automatically lock
Horn and backup alarms
If anything is not working properly, remove the lift from service and tag it out.
Some employers require operators to document pre-use checks using a daily inspection form. These may be paper-based or digital.
Never assume the lift is safe just because it worked yesterday. Daily inspections are your first and best line of defense.
