Title: Safe Operating Procedures
Type: Lesson
Even after you’ve completed inspections, your actions as the operator can make the difference between a smooth shift and a serious incident. This lesson outlines core safety procedures for operating MEWPs like boom lifts and scissor lifts.
Operate only if trained and authorized
Always wear required fall protection (harness & lanyard on boom lifts; sometimes not required on scissor lifts unless specified)
Maintain clear visibility — stop if view is obstructed
Travel at low speed, especially indoors or near pedestrians
Avoid sudden or jerky movements that may cause instability
Never override safety interlocks or alarms
Never climb on guardrails or use ladders inside the platform
Keep feet flat on the platform floor
Secure tools and prevent anything from falling
Close entry gates or chains before operation
Stay inside the guardrails at all times
Watch for overhead obstructions (pipes, beams, power lines)
Keep clear of drop-offs, holes, or uneven ground
Use spotters or flaggers in tight or congested areas
Avoid working near live electrical components without proper clearance
Only drive elevated if the lift is Type 3 and rated for it
Be cautious of slopes, curbs, and narrow passageways
Do not exceed lift’s safe slope limit (check manufacturer’s manual)
Always follow the specific operation guidelines found in the MEWP’s:
Operator manual (usually located on the lift)
Safety decals and labels
Worksite-specific policies
Complacency is a major hazard. Even experienced operators must follow every procedure — every time.
