Title: Emergency Procedures & Lowering Systems
Type: Lesson
Emergencies on a MEWP can include power failure, medical events, tip hazards, or a stuck platform. Quick, calm action is key to preventing further harm. This lesson covers how to respond safely and lower the platform using backup systems.
Power failure or control malfunction
Entrant becomes injured or unconscious
Platform gets stuck in the air
Equipment tip risk due to wind or unstable terrain
Crush or entrapment between platform and objects
Stop all movement immediately
Call for help or emergency services, if needed
Use the ground control panel to attempt safe lowering
If that fails, activate the emergency lowering system (manual or powered)
Stay in communication with the platform occupant
NEVER attempt to climb down or exit the platform at height
All MEWPs are required to have:
Ground control override system
Emergency lowering mechanism (manual valve or auxiliary power)
Only trained personnel should operate these systems. The lift’s operator manual will have exact steps for your model.
Stop operations and remove the lift from service if:
An alarm sounds continuously
Controls are not responsive
There is visible damage to the lift
You’re unsure of the lift’s condition or stability
Always follow site-specific emergency plans and report the incident to a supervisor.
You must know how to lower the platform safely — and never panic. Pre-job planning, clear communication, and equipment knowledge will help you handle an emergency the right way.
